DeepFake attack: The mayor of Berlin had a 30 min conversation with fake Klitschko
Berlin's Burgomaster Franziska Giffey spent about 30 minutes on video chatting with a man who posed as Kyiv's Mayor Vitali Klitschko, Bild writes. DeepFake was used for this purpose.
The video conference was arranged in advance by email. At the beginning of the conversation, “Klitschko” asked Giffey how many Ukrainian refugees had already been accepted by Berlin and how financial support works for them.
A bit later, "Klitschko" made a strange request: He asked the burgomaster to send all Ukrainian men from Berlin to Ukraine with the help of the police. Later, he also asked how Berlin copes with the fact that too many Ukrainians need social payments, the publication reports.
"The flow of the conversation <...> caused mistrust on the Berlin side. The conversation was interrupted prematurely," — wrote the Berlin Senate office. Also, the office noted that Giffey did not answer provocative questions and did not disclose secret information, Bild reports.
Ukraine's ambassador in Germany, Andrii Melnyk, as well as Klitschko himself, confirmed the falsity of the call to Bild.
Giffey noted that “the action was aimed at undermining trust and discrediting Ukraine's partners and allies.” She said that the person she spoke to communicated in Russian with the help of a German-language interpreter.
Requests for communication allegedly on behalf of Klitschko were sent to the Mayors of several European capitals from a fake email address, the Mayor of Kyiv said. Except Giffey, the mayor of Madrid also agreed to the conversation, the attacker also spoke to him using DeepFake technology.
The mayor of Vienna also fell victim to criminals. This was announced on Twitter by Bild Deputy Editor-in-Chief Paul Ronzheimer, referring to Klitschko's comment. According to the journalist, the Mayor of Vienna did not suspect that he was conversing with the false Klitschko.
